Apocalypse
The One-vs-All Game
Objectives
God player attempts to destroy the humans, while the humans try to escape the planet, or build up enough to survive.
Game Set-up
Players start by shuffling Role cards and randomly handing them out to choose roles. Make sure the God card is among these cards.
Humans then choose a starting area to place down their characters.
Shuffle the player cards and place them down. Each human player draws two cards from this pile to start.
Shuffle the God deck, and place it down near the god. God player draws three cards from the deck to start.
Roles
There is one God role and several human roles:
- God- god plays alone, using their event deck
- Doctor-May create medicine without using the medical center
- Pilot-can move to any space on the map as their movement
- Scientist-on their turn, they may draw an extra science as a resource
- Leader-may move another players character on the board for their actions
- Trader-may trade cards with the deck for their action
How to Play
Beginning with the god, players will take turns rotating clockwise.
Each player will have up to three actions they can take on their turn.
God Player Turn
Begin turn by drawing from the god deck.
God then may make any combination of three (3) actions
- Play event cards from their hand
- Block one territory from travel on the board for one round of turns
- Trade up to three (3) cards from their hand with the god-player deck
Once these actions are done, god discards any cards over the 10-card hand limit. Play switches to the human players
Human Player Turn
Begin turn by drawing resources based on the amount listed on the current location.
Players will then make any combination of three (3) actions
- Discard resources equal to a buildings cost to add it to the map
- Move between adjacent spaces on the game board, or along a specific water movement path
- Use player abilities
Players then discard any cards over the 10-card hand limit. Play continues to the next player in clockwise order.
Building
Player decks include three resources: stone, steel, and science. Players may discard the resources listed for a structure to build it and add it to the map on the territory the player is in. There are two types of buildings. Standard buildings may be built by any player, while special buildings can only be built by a specific player role.
Standard Buildings
- Road (2 Stone)- allows players to travel between territories without using an action for movement.
- Harbor (1 Steel, 1 Stone)-allows players to travel over an ocean path from one harbor to another without using movement as an action.
- Temporary Shelter (1 Stone, 2 Steel)-Provides protection from one disaster/god card, but may only protect one person. Destroy after the ability is played.
- Medicine (2 Science)-CAN ONLY BE BUILT AT A MEDICAL CENTER. A player may consume medicine to get one life back. Medicine is discarded after one use.
- Base (3 Stone, 3 Steel, 2 Science)– Protects all players on a territory from all events and actions the god takes. Is a permanent structure
- Spaceship Parts (2 Steel, 4 Science)– piece to a spaceship
- Medical Center (2 Steel, 3 Science)- Allows players to trade resources to make medicine
- Airport (2 Science, 1 Steel, 1 Stone)-can only be built by a pilot. Allows players to travel to any other airport for their movement
- Shop (2 Stone, 1 Steel)-Allows players to exchange their resources with the resource deck
God Abilities
God player has a list of ability cards that can be played
- Plague- roll a die. Choose players up to the number of the die rolled, and remove one life from each of those players
- Chaos-choose one player to lose their next turn and discard a card
- Crasher-destroy all roads and harbors in a given territory
- Crush-choose a building (excluding bases) and destroy it
- Death Gaze- roll a die remove that number of cards from a player’s hand
- Earthquake-destroy all buildings (excluding bases) on a territory
- Eruption-Choose one player and one building on the same territory. Destroy the building and take away one life from the player.
Lives
Each human player has three lives. If a player loses all three lives, they are out of the game permanently.
Winning Conditions
God Victory: God player wins if they are able to eliminate all three lives of every player and is the last one in the game.
Human Victory: humans can win in one of two ways
- If they are able to build the proper number of shelters, they can survive on the planet
- 2-3 Human Players: must build three (3) Bases
- 4-5 Human Players: must build five (5) Bases
- They gather all five (5) pieces to the spaceship and are able to escape the planets and the god.
Playtest#1
Problems we found and Suggestions we got during the first playtest:
- God is too powerful.
- Scientist is kind of useless, more like Trader
- Kind of hard for Humans to get resources
- The map is kind of useless
- Should players meet each other to trade? or not?
- Maybe 1 building can cover more blocks?
- Leader’s skill is not clear
- Should trading happen when two characters at the same block or not?
- Shelter vs. Eruption, which should win?
- Should Base be able to be destroyed or not? Or can resist the attack with limit numbers?
- Base is hard to build.
- The rules are not clear
- The buildings and the roles are not really connected
Changes we did after the playtest:
- Change -> “God block 1 territory”
- Medicine -> change to everyone can build, but can only be made at a medical center, only Doctor can make it without a medical center
- Deathgaze -> change the card rule since it is too powerful
- Delete the special buildings, everyone can build any buildings with resources
- Human will not lose a life under Eruption if there is a Shelter
- Change the card designs, add notes on the cards so players can know what the card can do
- Change the numbers of resources required for Base, make it more easy to build, and Base cannot be destroyed.
- Scientist -> can draw one more science in its turn
- Add gain-resource chance to Map, to encourage players to use the map and get more chance to gain resources.
- Leader -> skill change
- Humans can trade resources with each other when they want
- Tried to make rules more clear
- Add more skill cards for God, the more powerful a card, the smaller number of the card in the deck
Details and Works we still need to take care:
- Need some materials to be human’s life, medicine, and buildings
- Make sure rules are clear enough, or still need some changes
- The number of humans in a Base during one turn should be limited
- Need to print more god’s skill card
- Add human’s events to the game and do playtest again
- Need to redo the pictures of the cards
